Fitness Liverpool

By Lewis Bailey - Liverpool personal trainer

Lewis's Profile

More than 1,000 people in Liverpool will die this year because they are obese. As well as the huge personal impact, the cost to the local economy is astronomical- last year the NHS spent a whopping £23m on treating obesity in the area and the figure is rapidly rising.

A report commissioned by Liverpool’s Food and Health project Taste for Health, attributes the high death toll to severely unhealthy diets and it’s not surprising with the current fast food and 24 hour drinking culture.

But it’s time for the people of Liverpool to take action.

Having been in the fitness industry for many years, and personal training for 10 years, it is shocking to see how little information is available to the general public about where, when and how to exercise. And from my experience the biggest hurdle my clients face is not only their lack of exercise but in their lack of diet education and nutrition.

Other than football and running, this city is behind in terms of sport development, which is frustrating considering the millions spent on hosting the European capital of culture.

There are no informative magazines, events or campaigns that can help this city get back on its feet. The lose a million pounds campaign is a step in the right direction but that is only really scratching the surface.

However, credit should be given to Run Liverpool, the only fitness organisation that provides fantastic information on health, fitness, events and running clubs. But in order to get a fitter Liverpool we need to have more sporting establishments available to the public and even more information and awareness.

By changing our attitudes towards eating and exercise then maybe you can help improve our own lives and more importantly the generations to come.

So if you are reading this article and agree then do something about it, take yourself to local sports club of something you like doing and get fit!

Don’t think about doing it…do it.
