Fancy a burger

By Kane Warren - Liverpool personal trainer

Today’s society loves fast food and the burger is defiantly one of the kings, the burger is the perfect match for the desire of a quick tasty fix. We have many versions of this fast food giant and the super power fast food chains have many marketing schemes to get you to chow down their version of the nation’s favorite.

Do we really know or understand what we are putting into our bodies when we reach for that easy option or have we reached a point now that if the packet looks good and it seems to be filling, we don’t care! The truth is no we don’t! The three heavy weights of the fast food world; Mc Donald’s, KFC and Burger King have globally set up over 80.000 restaurants and are contributing to the industry’s value that is now worth over a staggering 102 billion pounds.

In one of the world’s most famous burgers the Big Mac you will be shoveling 490 calories of energy that serves minimal nutritional value, you will also consume near to 1:3 of your daily fat percentage. Which is fine if the fat is a good source of fat such as fish or organic meat, but the truth is a large amount of this fat will be comprised of a very bad kind of fat called Tran’s fat. This fat can be found in a natural form in low levels which even then isn’t needed by the body. However many people are exposing their selves to the processed version which can be found in many of today’s foods, such as: take a ways, crackers, biscuits, butter, chips and yes burgers! Tran’s fats are responsible for increasing the risk of Coronary Heart Disease, type Two Diabetes Obesity and even cancer.

Tran’s fats are a fat the body has no use for whatsoever as a result the body cannot metabolize the fat, there for leaving it for prolonged amounts of time in the blood supply often leading to the buildup of plaque in the net work of blood vessels.

What we also need to consider where the meat is coming from and the quality of the product. Although there are strict health regulations rules the quality still can be sub standard in the terms of what we should be eating to gain the full nutritional benefit of our foods. So what is the standard we should be eating? Organic free range produce is the only way to eat when it comes to meat and veg, with clean soils and untreated animals living a healthy life in a good environment, the quality and the health of the food is to a higher standard meaning we absorb higher quality proteins, fats and minerals. You wouldn’t put diesel into a high performance super car so why do it to ourselves.

The sauces and complements with our burgers is where the real problems can come into play with the big mac sauce having 28 additives to achieve the flavor the nation loves. This is where the body struggles to process and digest leading to a manner of problems if exposed to regular meals. Eating take away burgers and the meals on a regular basis can lead to diabetes, diverticulitis, heat conditions, weight gain, fat storing etc.

So next time you are craving a big cheese burger why not go to your local butchers and buy some quality organic mince and make your own home made burgers with a homemade sauce to accompany. This way you can have the pleasure of a good quality burger but you can relax knowing you are also eating a nutritionally sounds meal.
